The Vikings are trying to bolster their defensive backfield with some fresh faces.
On Thursday, the Vikings agreed to a deal with former Carolina Panthers cornerback Captain Munnerlyn. They also signed free-agent cornerback Derek Cox to a one-year deal, according to Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego.
According to Pro Football Talk, Thursday was the one-year anniversary of a deal Cox signed with the San Diego Chargers – a deal that paid him $10.25 million in guaranteed money. The 27-year-old has 13 interceptions through five seasons. He was a third-round pick by the Jaguars in 2009.
ESPN’s Ben Goessling says Cox began last season as a starter for the Chargers, but was benched on three separate occasions in November, ultimately losing his starting job. At 6-foot-1, Cox is a low-risk gamble who provides the Vikings with another big body in the secondary.
The stats, according to The Daily Norseman, aren’t impressive. Cox allowed opposing quarterbacks to post an impressive passer rating of 104, while completing 60 percent of their passes.
With Cox and Munnerlyn in, the Vikings could be looking at the end of the Chris Cook era. Cook reportedly visited the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday. After four years in the NFL Cook has yet to intercept a pass.
