Marwan Maalouf, a longtime assistant coach with the Miami Dolphins, has been hired to be special teams coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings, according to Alex Marvez of Fox Sports.
Maalouf spent the past six seasons with the Miami Dolphins and prior to that he coached with the Ravens, Colts and Browns.
The Dolphins’ website raves about him being on a staff that saw Cody Parkey make 21-of-23 field goals in 2017 in addition to Parkey tying an NFL record with four successful onside kicks.
Wait? The Vikings hired a guy who helped coach the kicker who would later go on to ruin the Bears’ 2018 season?
Juicy, isn’t it?
A witch doctor probably wouldn’t prescribe a guy connected to Parkey as a cure to Minnesota’s kicking curse, but Maalouf is connected to more kickers than Parkey.
And really, Parkey was good for the Dolphins before becoming Chicago’s version of Blair Walsh.
Maybe Maalouf had a lot to do with that success?
The Dolphins were also routinely rated among the top 10 special teams units in football during Maalouf’s time there, so he clearly knows a thing or two about kick coverage and the return game, not to mention being on a staff that saw teams block its fair share of field goals and punts.
Maalouf was Indy’s special teams coordinator in 2012 where he worked with future Hall of Fame kicker Adam Vinatieri, who booted a 53-yard game-winning field to beat the Vikings that season.
Maalouf was also once a writer for Scout Inc. and ESPN.com, so he’ll understand why we’ve turned his promotion into a laugh by unfairly connecting him to Parkey.
