The NFL’s new league year starts in two weeks – March 13 to be exact – and the Vikings are looking to find a trade partner for cornerback Trae Waynes, according to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora.
There’s no detail from La Canfora other than him saying “league sources said the Vikings are shopping corner Trae Waynes.”
What to make of the report?
For starters, he’s at the NFL Combine where rumors spread like crazy. Some are true, some are false starts, but La Canfora is probably doing what every other big-time reporter is doing in Indianapolis this week: sitting in the lobby and bar area of the J.W. Marriott and talking to NFL head coaches and general managers.
It happens, and it’s commonplace this time of year.
Trading Waynes could save the Vikings some serious salary cap space. The 26 year old former first-round pick is entering his fifth year in the league, and he’s due to make about $9 million, which becomes fully guaranteed at the start of the new league year.
Minnesota has tremendous depth at corner with Xavier Rhodes, Mackensie Alexander, Mike Hughes, Holton Hill, Marcus Sherels and Waynes, so trading him for a draft pick, or perhaps offensive line help, makes a ton of sense, especially if they can save some money in the process.
Either way, rumor season is back in full swing and will stay that way throughout the NFL Draft.
