The countdown to to the NFL Draft is down to four days and the latest from a major insider reveals that the Minnesota Vikings have made a call to the New England Patriots and “attempted to move up” for the No. 3 pick
That’s not shocking, especially since Minnesota head coach Kevin O’Connell joked in a church last week that he may or may not have sent a nice bouquet of flowers to Patriots owner Robert Kraft.
What’s more noteworthy in the report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter is that “some around the league believe if the Vikings can get as high as No. 3, their preference would be quarterback Drake Maye.”
That falls in line with a report over the weekend from Ben Volin of the Boston Globe, who said he believes the Vikings like Maye more than the Patriots.
“If the Patriots were truly sold on Maye, they wouldn’t consider trading their No. 3 pick,” Volin wrote. “My hunch is that the Vikings want Maye more based on the fact that Vikings quarterbacks coach Josh McCown knows Maye well, having coached Maye in 2019 at Myers Park High in Charlotte, N.C. where McCown’s two sons also played.”
If Maye doesn’t go No. 2 to the Commanders, who instead go with LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels, does that make New England more likely to deal the No. 3 pick?
A report this past weekend from ESPN’s Mike Reiss claims the Patriots won’t their pick unless they receive an “unprecedented” offer. He went as far as to say that “barring an unexpected blockbuster trade offer, according to sources, the Patriots will move forward with a plan that has been months in the works — getting a quarterback.”
We’ll know by about 7:30 p.m. CT Thursday.
