After being the focal point of the Bomba Squad in 2019, the Twins are bringing back Nelson Cruz for the 2020 season.
MLB.com Network inside Jon Heyman tweeted on Wednesday morning that the Twins have picked up the veteran slugger’s $12 million option for 2020.
The 39-year-old Cruz showed no sign of slowing down despite being one of the oldest players on any MLB roster, putting together an astounding season that should at least put him in the conversation as an MVP candidate.
He blasted 41 homers in 2019, running up 108 RBIs and 81 runs with a batting average of .311, an average bettered only by Luis Arraez.
The numbers are even more impressive given that he missed about a quarter of the season through injury, with his stats coming from only 454 at-bats.
Although most of the changes are expected to be made in the Twins’ pitching staff for 2020, there are still some questions to be answered ahead of 2020.
Free agents on the Twins’ books include Jason Castro and Jonathan Schoop, while there has been talk among some pundits about whether the Twins should consider trading Eddie Rosario.
