The Minnesota Twins lost a key piece of their bullpen on Tuesday as reliever Trevor May has reportedly agreed to sign with the New York Mets.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that May is in agreement on a two-year deal pending a physical. If May passes, the deal could become official on Wednesday.
May was acquired prior to the 2013 season in part of the deal that sent Ben Revere to the Philadelphia Phillies. After spending time in the starting rotation, May became a full-time reliever in 2016 before missing the 2017 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery.
Upon his return, May established himself in the Twins’ bullpen compiling a 3.19 ERA in 113 innings over the past three seasons. This also includes a 12.2 strikeout per nine innings ratio, making him one of the Twins’ favorite relievers in late-inning situations.
With May’s departure, the Twins bullpen will look different in 2021. The team has already declined an option on Sergio Romo and Tyler Clippard is a free agent.
