Mere months after signing a one-year, $5.25 million deal with Oakland in the offseason, former Twins third baseman Trevor Plouffe was designated for assignment by the A’s on Thursday, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
With Oakland out-righting Plouffe off the 25-man roster, the team is calling up their top prospect Matt Chapman, who was a first-round pick in 2014.
In 58 games this season, Plouffe batted .214 with seven home runs and 14 RBI while also committing six errors at third base.
Despite having a year of team control, the Twins did not tender Plouffe a contract last winter, which cleared the way for slugger Miguel Sano to be the everyday third baseman.
Plouffe – who was a first-round pick by the Twins in 2004 – was Minnesota’s Opening Day third baseman from 2012-2016. He slashed .247/.306/.416 during his seven seasons with the Twins.
Plouffe can either accept his assignment to the minor leagues, or he can elect to become a free agent.
