Among the aging stars waiting in free agency limbo is Adrian Peterson. After being told his contract was too rich for the Vikings, he’s about 48 hours from being free to sign with any team in the NFL when the signing period begins at 3 p.m. Thursday.
Beginning at 11 a.m. Central Time Tuesday, Peterson can begin legally talking to teams, including the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots.
According to Karen Guregian of the Boston Herald, Peterson would consider taking handoffs from Tom Brady at a reduced price.
“A source close to Peterson told the Herald that since AP has already earned a ton — more than $97 million is his career — it’s certainly something he’d consider. Peterson knows how it worked out for Darrelle Revis and Chris Long. But naturally, there will be a lot of teams in the mix, including the Vikings. And, of course, the Pats would have to want to bring in an aging back with an injury history, not to mention baggage.”
Peterson was due to make $18 million next season, a contract option the Vikings declined to pick up.
Recent history suggests the Patriots avoid paying running backs more than $2 million a season, according to NFL.com, so the big question is whether Peterson would leave money on the table from other contenders, including the Vikings, to team up with Brady and Bill Belichick for a shot at a Super Bowl.
On Monday, Peterson posted another workout video to Twitter and wrote, “stay tuned.”
