NFL free agency is unofficially underway as teams can spend the next two days trying to convince pending free agents to sign deals, or in the case of the Minnesota Vikings, jump on a team that believes it’s getting closer to competing for a Super Bowl.
The Vikings’ biggest needs are at offensive line, safety and wide receiver, and they’ve already reportedly made a move to help bolster the right side of the offensive line.
The Pioneer Press reports that right tackle Phil Loadholt has agreed to take a pay cut to stay with the Vikings. Loadholt missed the entire 2015 season with a torn Achilles.
Loadholt was due to inflict a $7.75 million cap hit on the Vikings had he not agreed to the pay cut, which the Pioneer Press says includes a base salary of just $2 million.
Minnesota has about $23 million in salary cap space entering the official beginning of free agency on Wednesday. The next big decision could involve left tackle, former No. 4 overall pick, Matt Kalil.
The Star Tribune says the Vikings have until Wednesday to either cut Kalil or pay him $11 million guaranteed next season.
The Pioneer Press adds that wide receiver Adam Thielen and tackle Carter Bykowski agreed to undisclosed terms. Safety Andrew Sendejo also agreed to terms last week.
