Richard Pitino is apparently moving on after eight years as head coach of the University of Minnesota men’s basketball team.
According to Stadium.com basketball insider Jeff Goodman, the Gophers have decided to “part ways” with Pitino. Goodman did not use “fired” to describe the situation.
The U of M has not confirmed the report, though rumors of Pitino’s fate have been circulating for weeks.
What’s more is that Goodman says Pitino and former Nebraska coach Tim Miles, who also previously coached at Southwest Minnesota State University, are frontrunners to be named the next head coach at the University of New Mexico.

The Gophers reached the NCAA tournament just two times, winning one game at the tourney, under Pitino.
The 2020-21 season got off to a promising start as the Gophers were 11-2 and ranked in the top 25 for multiple weeks, but they fell apart down the stretch, losing 11 of their final 15 games to miss out on the NCAA tournament.
