The Minnesota Vikings and Danielle Hunter have reportedly agreed to a restructured contract, allowing Hunter to report to the team’s minicamp, which begins on Tuesday.
The report comes from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, who revealed that “significant money” will be moved from the back end of Hunter’s contract to a $5.6 million signing bonus this season.
Rapoport also reports that Hunter’s new deal includes an $18 million roster bonus on the fifth day of the league year in 2022. According to Spotrac, the Vikings had $15.6 million in cap space before restructuring Hunter’s contract, which should lead to an extension or a trade out of Minnesota next offseason.
Hunter, who missed the entire 2020 season with a neck injury, didn’t attend any organized team activities nor any other voluntary spring workouts.
Skipping those sessions cost him a $100,000 workout bonus, according to NFL Network, which notes that Hunter has long desired a new contract after signing a five-year, $72 million deal in 2018. At approximately $14.4 million annually, Hunter is the 17th-highest edge rusher in the NFL.
According to the Star Tribune’s Ben Goessling and NFL Network’s James Jones, Hunter will report to the start of minicamp on Tuesday which leaves the question if Hunter will participate in on-field workouts.
Hunter racked up 14.5 sacks in 2018 and 2019 en route to Pro Bowl honors. If healthy, the 26-year-old is one of the best edge rushers in the NFL.
