According to a report from Yahoo! Sports’ Jake Fischer, Lakers guard D’Angelo Russell was looking for a four-year, $100 million contract before the Timberwolves traded him in the three-team blockbuster with the Lakers and Jazz.
“Then there’s the matter of Russell, who was seeking a new deal worth upward of $100 million over four years when he was with the Timberwolves, sources said. After an inconsistent postseason, it’s hard to imagine many bidders for Russell at that price point,” Fischer writes.
Russell’s four-year, $117 million deal he signed in July 2019 comes ends this season, meaning he’ll be on the market as an unrestricted free agent this summer.
The 27-year-old guard helped the Lakers make the playoffs after being traded to Los Angeles in the deal that sent Mike Conley from Utah to Minnesota and Russell Westbrook to the Jazz, who immediately bought him out, allowing him to sign with the Clippers.
Russell had some great moments for the Lakers in the regular season and the first two rounds of the playoffs, but he was a non-factor in the Western Conference Finals and the Lakers were swept by the Nuggets. Russell was benched and didn’t start Game 4.
