That name alone made defensive backs cringe for a 16-year period in which Moss torched the league for 982 receptions, 15,292 yards and a whopping 156 touchdown grabs.
But are those the numbers Moss will take with him to Canton, Ohio, when he’s a likely first-ballot Hall of Fame inductee?
When asked by an ESPN reporter Monday, Moss didn’t completely shut the door on a comeback.

Moss was dressed in Patriots apparel as a spectator of the Patriots and Saints joint practice in Moss’ home state of West Virginia.

Pro Football Talk is already throwing out some speculation as to where Moss could play if he decided to make a comeback this season. The first guess was for the Carolina Panthers, who badly need help at wide receiver after their top receiver, Kelvin Benjamin, went down a season-ending injury on Monday. PFT notes that Moss already has a home in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Earlier this summer Moss attended Carolina quarterback Cam Newton’s charity kickball event. Moss was quoted in the Charlotte Observer comparing Charlotte to Minnesota, which he said was very good to him when he played for the Vikings.
“You have to have a city backing you,” Moss said. “Minnesota was good to me. There are 32 teams in the NFL and I can honestly say every team does not have a good city. I think Charlotte is a great city. Minnesota was great to me and I feel kind of the same vibe here.”
It’s not too late for Moss to get on board with a team. If you recall, Brett Favre didn’t come out of retirement to join the Vikings until Aug. 19, 2009.
