For all the griping Vikings fans are doing about Christian Ponder, Minnesota might actually be in better shape in the quarterback department than the Cleveland Browns, who come to the Dome on Sunday.
Third-string quarterback Brian Hoyer will start Sunday against Minnesota in place of Brandon Weeden, who sprained his right thumb last week, according to the Associated Press.
Who? You know, Brian Hoyer, that kid from Michigan State who spent a few years in New England as Tom Brady’s backup. Two years ago, he completed his one and only pass for the Patriots that season. Last year, with Arizona, he threw 53 passes and completed 30 of them.
Hoyer was chosen by coach Rob Chudzinski ahead of Jason Campbell, who had been listed as the team’s No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart, reports the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
It’s not yet known how long Weeden will be sidelined. He has already been sacked 11 times this season, says the AP.
In fact, Cleveland’s offensive line is pretty weak so far, so it’s possible that Hoyer is seen as more mobile than Campbell.
The Browns will also have back top wide receiver Josh Gordon, who was suspended from the season’s first two games for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.
