Twins third baseman Trevor Plouffe has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation between the ninth rib and the costal cartilage on his left side, according to reports.
Plouffe injured his oblique during the Twins 12-9 loss to the Detroit Tigers Saturday, reports says.
The Twins activated shortstop Pedro Florimon for Sunday’s game against the Tigers, ESPN reports. Plouffe was sent home to Minneapolis with the flu Sunday, the Star Tribune says.
The Twins’ infield depth was already being tested, MLB.com notes. Eduardo Nunez replaced Plouffe in Saturday’s game, but in the eighth inning he pulled his hamstring. Brian Dozier, who was recovering from a back injury that prevented him from playing Friday, was forced to play Saturday to replace Nunez, MLB.com says.
In 64 games this year, Plouffe has five home runs and a team-leading 38 RBIs. Florimon was the starting shortstop at the start of the 2014 season. In 25 games at the major league level he has seven hits, one RBI and one extra-base hit, Puckett’s Pond notes.
