The Washington Redskins player who delivered the crushing blow to Adrian Peterson’s knee on Dec. 24, 2011, says he’s rooting for the Vikings star running back to break Eric Dickerson’s rushing record, USA Today reports.
Safety DeJon Gomes told the publication that anytime a player is injured, “you want to see them come back and have success. Because at the end of the day, it’s our livelihoods.”
Peterson needs to rush 208 yards against the Packers in the last game of the regular season Sunday to break Dickerson’s 2,105 yard-record set in 1984.
He is also just 102 yards shy of breaking the 2,000-yard rushing mark.
The attempt at the feat comes a little more than a year after the devastating injury, where Gomes crashed into Peterson’s left knee, helmet-first, from the side — tearing both his ACL and MCL.
Gomes maintains he was just trying to make a tackle and he “wasn’t trying to hurt” Peterson.
“It wasn’t malicious,” Gomes told USA Today.
Peterson said before the Vikings game against the Redskins in October that he didn’t hold any grudges against Gomes or his team.
