What was bad news for the likes of LSU, Ole Miss and a bunch of other marquee college football programs on Saturday night was very good news for the Gophers.
Rashad Cheney Jr., a four-star defensive tackle recruit out of Georgia, committed to the Gophers by tagging head coach P.J. Fleck in a tweet and saying he’s “coming home.”

According to 247 Sports, Cheney was previously committed to Georgia and Alabama before withdrawing those commitments. He picked Minnesota over LSU, Ole Miss, George Tech, Arkansas, Kentucky, Miami, Mississippi State and others.
Cheney visited the University of Minnesota in early November and clearly came away impressed.
In an interview with DawgNation following Cheney’s commitment to Georgia, his father described him as a very humble and quietly confident person.
“You can tell he is a quiet and confident young man but he has never been that rah-rah or a ‘ Look at me’ or ‘Hey, look what I did’ or ‘I am the best’ every day,” said Rashad Cheney Sr. “He’s always been a thinker. Always just looking and thinking. Just a real humble young man. I can honestly say that.”
Having already withdrawn his commitment twice already, the Gophers might be on pins and needles the next few months before Cheney graduates from his high school in Atlanta and moves north to Minnesota.
