A minor bombshell today from new Gophers head basketball coach Richard Pitino.
He says it’s “unrealistic” to expect the University of Minnesota to qualify for the 2014 NCAA basketball tournament.
In an interview with the St. Paul Pioneer Press, Pitino pointed to the loss of seniors Trevor Mbakwe and Rodney Williams, who he calls “very good players.”
Pitino repeated the theme in the Star Tribune, saying his goal off the bat is to “develop a culture of hard, hard work” … and establish his brand of basketball.
“I’m not going to look at wins and losses in year one,” Pitino said. “We’ve lost some pretty big pieces.”
