Former DeLasalle standout and Gopher hoopster Ben Johnson is the latest addition to new U coach Richard Pitino’s coaching staff, the Pioneer Press reports.
Johnson, 31, was an assistant under Nebraska coach Tim Miles for one season in 2012-13. He also spent four seasons as a Northern Iowa assistant (2008-12) and two seasons as a Texas-Pan American assistant (2006-08).
Though the official announcement won’t be until Monday, the hiring has hardly been a secret. There was a leak that got around Thursday, and the Strib reached Johnson Friday at a Gopher football scrimmage. Does he bleed maroon and gold or what?
Johnson played guard for the Gophers (2002-04)–where he averaged 11.5 points his senior season–and Northwestern (1999-2001). He also led DeLaSalle to two state championships in high school.
