The University of South Alabama’s football roster will not include Philip Nelson’s name on it this fall.
Nelson, the ex-Gopher who transferred to Rutgers but was kicked off the team before playing game after his involvement in the fight that left former Minnesota State-Mankato football player Isaac Kolstad with brain injuries, was reportedly on his way to South Alabama to compete for the starting quarterback job.
The report came last week after Nelson’s father told the Star Tribune that his son was headed to the school. But an email to the Star Tribune from South Alabama’s associate athletics director on Thursday proved the report inaccurate.
“In reference to your earlier communication in regard to Philip Nelson, he will not be a member of the University of South Alabama football program,”Associate Athletic Director Brian Fremund said in the email.
Prior to the report of Nelson signing with South Alabama, Fresno State, Georgia and Ole Miss were in the mix for his services, although all three withdrew interest while Nelson’s legal situation evolved, NJ.com reports.
Nelson still has two years of playing eligibility remaining.
