The Minnesota Vikings have ruled Adrian Peterson out of Sunday’s season finale against the Detroit Lions.
NBC Sports reports that Peterson had previously been listed as doubtful with a groin injury.
The announcement will bring about the end of the season for Peterson.
Peterson had been struggling with foot and groin injuries that have slowed his production, according to NFL.com. Peterson has rushed for 1,266 yards and 10 touchdowns on the season, far off of last year’s near record pace of 2,097 yards.
Friday it was announced that Peterson has been selected to his sixth Pro Bowl. He is the team’s lone representative.
The downgrading of Peterson will give the Vikings another chance to look at Matt Asiata on Sunday. Peterson’s normal backup Toby Gerhart was ruled out earlier in the week with a hamstring injury.
Asiata’s first NFL start came for the Vikings a couple of weeks ago when he ran the ball 30 times for 51 yards, but he scored three touchdowns in Minnesota’s victory over Philadelphia.
