Patrick Mahomes admires the things Justin Jefferson does that he believes most people don’t recognize.
“First off, Justin Jefferson, he’s great. His talent to recognize coverages and I think what people really don’t understand is how physical he is catching the football,” Mahomes said Wednesday. “If you watch the games, man, he’ll go over there and get it. He’ll put his body on the line. You can tell he loves competing, he loves winning. I think that’s what makes a lot of great players in this league and that’s why he’s had so much success so early in his career.”
Coincidentally, Jefferson’s fearlessness is exactly what Purple Insider’s Matthew Coller wrote about last week. Read the feature story here.
Jefferson has been a beast from Day 1, but his numbers this season through four games jump off the page. He leads the league in receiving yards (543), yards per game (135.8) and big plays (14). Big plays are defined as receptions for 20+ yards. Six of Jefferson’s big plays have gone for 30+ yards, which is also the most in the NFL.
At 3:25 p.m. Sunday, all eyes will be on the best QB and WR in the league. They’ll be facing each other in Minneapolis as the 1-3 Vikings host the 3-1 Chiefs in a game that Minnesota is desperate to win. With a victory, Minnesota will have a chance to get back to .500 in Week 6 when they visit the winless Bears, followed by a home game against the undefeated 49ers and then a trip to Lambeau Field to face the Packers.
Mahomes also praised Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins.
“The mental side of it, obviously he’s able to really dissect defenses, get the ball to the right spot,” Mahomes said. “You can tell they put a lot on him to be able to check at the line of scrimmage, which I thought was really cool to see. And then physically, man, he took a beating last year but he just came back every time and stood in there and made throws. He’s a guy that you can tell loves football and loves going out there and competing every single week.”
