And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Winning creates smiles, losing creates drama. And there’s plenty of drama in the Minnesota clubhouse right now.
After the Twins lost to the Tigers last night, 7-6, here’s what some are saying about Minnesota’s season-long nine-game losing streak:
For Yahoo.com’s Darin McGilvra, bad luck is rearing its ugly head:
“Right now, it seems every close call is going against them, weakly hit balls by opponents are finding holes in key situations, and well-hit balls by the Twins are finding gloves at the wrong time.”
For Fox Sports North’s Tyler Mason, the nine-gamer may be a preview of worse things to come:
“Even during last year’s dismal 96-loss season, the Minnesota Twins never had a skid quite like this. Minnesota’s longest losing streak last season was just six games. The Twins are now approaching their longest skid in 2011 — 11 games during the 99-loss season.”
Pioneer Press writer Mike Berardino quotes Joe Mauer (before Thursday’s loss), who said the Twins don’t need a team meeting:
“Guys are busting their tails,” Mauer said. “Guys are out there playing the game hard. That’s how you need to play. It just hasn’t been falling our way lately.”
And this, from Star Tribune “From Section 219” blogger Howard Sinker, who now calls Minnesota “Kansas City North”:
“We used to watch the Royals talk about how better stuff was ahead and then they’d get off a respectable start — followed by a tumble to the bottom. That’s exactly what’s been happening to the 2013 Twins, who worked so hard to be respectable for the first five weeks that little appears to be left for the next five months.”
