Twins first baseman Justin Morneau wins the American League MVP award.
Morneau hit .320 with 34 homers and 130 RBI, and edged New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter for the award in what was considered an upset.
The Twins won the AL Central and the second-most games in franchise history in Morneau’s MVP season, before being swept by Oakland in the first round of the playoffs.
Morneau was the sixth Twin to win the MVP award, and Joe Mauer would become the seventh just three years later in a near unanimous decision.
Earlier this year, Morneau was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates for outfielder Alex Presley and pitcher Duke Welker, whom was traded back to Pittsburgh yesterday.
Morneau is currently a free agent.
