The demolition of the Met Center in Bloomington begins with an implosion.
Known originally as the Metropolitan Sports Center, the 15,000-seat arena which stood from 1967-1993 served as home to the Minnesota North Stars, as well as two professional basketball teams and many entertainment-related events.
Usually, an implosion takes care of a building, but the Met Center would not fall via the detonation, as bulldozers and heavy machinery would have finish the job.
The new version of the Met Center resides in St. Paul in the form of the Xcel Energy Center, which serves as home to Minnesota’s newest pro hockey team, the Minnesota Wild.
The now-gone North Stars home cost $6 million to build, while the “X” carried a slightly heftier price tag of $170 million.
