The Minnesota North Stars raise the curtain on professional hockey in the state, picking up their first win in their first home game, a 3-1 win over the Oakland Seals.
The North Stars’ addition to the NHL in 1967 was part of a six-team expansion which would bring the league from six to 12 teams. The other expansion teams were the aforementioned Oakland Seals, the Los Angeles Kings, Philadelphia Flyers, St. Louis Blues, and Pittsburgh Penguins.
The North Stars would go on to finish fourth in the six-team West Division, making the playoffs and defeating the expansion L.A. Kings in seven games. They would go on to face the expansion St. Louis Blues in the Western Conference Finals, a series that would also go seven games, with Minnesota this time coming out on the losing end in the best-of-seven showdown.
The North Stars would be in existence in Minnesota until 1993, when owner Norman Green moved the team to Dallas. They would become the Dallas Stars in 1994.
