The men’s hockey match versus Slovenia will be replayed on NBC Sports Network at 2 p.m. The men’s curling team took on Sweden earlier today in a match that can be seen on CNBC at 3 p.m., and the women’s curling team took on Canada in a match that has already aired.
U.S. MEN’S HOCKEY:
Following their massive Saturday win over Russia in a marathon shootout anchored by Warroad High School alum T.J. Oshie, the men made easy work of Slovenia 5-1 early Sunday. Another Minnesota connection was the star this time around, with University of Minnesota alum Phil Kessel recording a hat-trick in the runaway victory. The brother of current Gopher Amanda Kessel started quick, scoring twice in the first five minutes, and adding his third in the second period making the score Kessel 3, Slovenia 0. Kessel is the first U.S. Olympian to have three goals in a game in over a decade, and the other two U.S. goals were also supplied by Minnesota connections, St. Paul native Ryan Mcdonagh and Minneapolis native David Backes scoring to ice the contest. The win clinches a bye to the quarterfinal for the U.S., and they are seeded No. 2 of the four teams thru to the quarters. The stars and stripes will face the winner of Czech Republic-Slovakia Wednesday.
U.S. MEN’S CURLING:
It’s just about over for John Shuster and the U.S. men’s curling team, as they lost to Sweden today 6-4 in their second-to-last match of the 2014 Games. Shuster admitted the day before the loss that the team has not performed up to par, and the loss eliminated them from playoff contention, meaning the team that boasts four Minnesotans of their five members has one last hoorah in Sochi Monday against Switzerland.
U.S. WOMEN’S CURLING:
The U.S. has been painfully close the past two days, losing 7-6 to Sweden Saturday and by the same score to Canada early Sunday. Minnesota natives Jessica Schultz and Allison Pottinger were part of the contest that forced Canada to an extra end, before falling to the still-undefeated Canadiens. The U.S. are also on their last legs at the Games, as they take on Korea Monday at 9 a.m. Sochi time, and 11 p.m. central time tonight.
