Brad Maxwell, the tough defenseman who starred for the Minnesota North Stars in the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s, has died at the age of 66 following a fight with cancer.
Maxwell died Sunday, Sept. 3 after a battle with an aggressive form of lung cancer. His death was confirmed by organizers of a GoFundMe that was established when Maxwell’s cancer diagnosis was announced to the public in August.
“We want to express our sincere gratitude for the love and support shown to us during this difficult time,” the message reads. “It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Brad ‘Maxy’ Maxwell on September 3rd, 2023. Those who knew him were truly lucky, and he will be deeply missed. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.”

Maxwell played for the North Stars in nine of his 10 seasons in the NHL, from 1977 to 1985 and then again during his final season in 1986-87. He was an All-Star during the 1983-84 season when he set career highs with 19 goals and 54 assists.
For his career, he tallied 98 goals and 270 assists. He was drafted in 1977 and entered the league as a 20-year-old who burst onto the scene with 18 goals and 29 assists.
The GoFundMe for Maxwell’s family has generated around $27,000 of a $75,000 goal.
