Minnetonka’s Danny Klaers’ overtime goal settled a wildly entertaining and closely contested game between two of the state’s top high school hockey teams as top-ranked Minnetonka took home the 5-4 win over No. 3 Wayzata.
Wayzata stormed out to a 2-0 first period lead thanks to goals from Jake Mattson and Eli Molde.
Minnetonka waited just 18 seconds into the second period to strike, halving the score with Luke Garry’s goal. Nine minutes later Ashton Schultz leveled at two-a-piece. Schultz then put the Skippers ahead with his second goal of the period at the 15:45 mark.
Rhys Wallin leveled it 2:05 into the third period and Eli Molde restored the Trojans’ lead with his goal 8:48 into the period. Minnetonka answered a minute-and-a-half later with Javon Moore’s goal that would eventually send the game to overtime.
Klaers’ overtime winner would cap off a massive win for the Skippers in a potential preview of the state championship game.
