Rick Spielman knows how to use Twitter.
That’s fair warning for college football players hoping to hear their name called during the NFL Draft. At the NFL Scouting Combine, the Vikings’ general manager said he tracked 60 players on Twitter – and actually red-flagged eight of them for comments they made on their Twitter accounts.
“There were guys I found on Twitter this year that I can’t believe they would post and re-Tweet some of the stuff they were saying,” Spielman said, according to USA Today. “We wrote a report just on their Twitter accounts.
“I won’t say the names. But out of the 60 that we did, there are eight guys that we have concerns about their Twitter feeds that we will address here (at the combine).”
Spielman said it’s “amazing” that some players tweet about drug use and partying and they don’t realize the potential for negative results.
As noted by Pro Football Talk, a bad move on social media by a player already under the microscope can be enough for some teams to completely cross them off their list.
ESPN’s “SportsNation” discussed the importance of players learning that irresponsible actions on Twitter and Facebook can get a person with a normal job fired, and the NFL needs to create a more responsible environment, too.
