The annual spring NFL owner meetings are ongoing in Atlanta and the most polarizing talking point on the agenda is how the league will deal with national anthem demonstrations.
In recent seasons, more and more players have taken a knee during the national anthem as a way to demonstrate and raise awareness for civil rights issues for which they’re concerned.
How the NFL handles players who take a knee going forward is a hot button issue, and an idea the owners are floating around, according to The MMQB’s Albert Breer, will certainly get people talking.
Breer writes:
“An idea being floated in the room goes like this: It would be up to the home team on whether both teams come out of the locker room for the anthem, and, should teams come out, 15-yard penalties could be assessed for kneeling.”
Colin Kaepernick and Eric Reid, both former 49ers, are currently suing the NFL for collusion. They argue that they remain unsigned for non-football reasons, specifically using their platform as NFL players to shine a line on activism they’re passionate about.
