With seven players from last season’s roster already signed with new teams, the Vikings announced Wednesday that veteran cornerback Terence Newman has agreed to terms and will return next season.
Earlier this week, Newman told SiriusXM NFL Radio that he had a deal in place with a team that believes has a shot at winning a Super Bowl next season.
“I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t think I could win a ring. I wouldn’t try to play this game and go to a team that is ‘rebuilding’ or what have you,” Newman said. “But the fact that I have an opportunity with a team that I know has a shot at winning a ring, that’s the part that, to me, is important. Because as an older player, you don’t want to be in a situation where you’re trying to do nothing but teach young guys. It gives me an opportunity to actually be able to teach young guys and be in a position where I can get a ring while playing.”
Terms of Newman’s deal weren’t disclosed, but it’s clear that he believes in the path the Vikings are taking.
Minnesota started last season 5-0 before faltering down the stretch and missing the playoffs with an 8-8 record.
Newman turns 39 years old on Sept. 4, making him the oldest player on the roster and one of the oldest players in the NFL.
He finished with one interception while playing in 15 games (9 starts) last season.
