Former Twins first baseman Justin Morneau won’t be returning to Minnesota, as Tuesday night he signed a two-year, $13 million contract to play in Colorado.
The Twins traded Morneau to Pittsburgh just before the final trade deadline of the 2013 season, and he helped the Pirates to their first playoff appearance since 1992.
There was minimal speculation at the beginning of the offseason that Morneau would come back to the place he spent the first 10-plus seasons of his MLB career, but those thoughts were essentially erased when Minnesota announced they’d move Joe Mauer to first base.
Morneau is a four-time All-Star, won the 2006 AL MVP award, and will be taking the first base position that Todd Helton held down with the Rockies for 17 years.
