Michael Rand of the Star Tribune caught up with Dan Courtemanche, the Executive VP of Communications for Major League Soccer, to talk about the possibility of the new Vikings’ stadium housing an MLS team in the future.
“No question,” Courtemanche said. “We believe it’s another strong indicator of the growth of soccer across the country when you have venues like this that can house not just a potential MLS team but a World Cup game in the future.”
Courtemanche indicated that MLS would eventually expand to 24 or 28 teams. There are currently 19 teams.
Vikings vice president of public affairs and stadium development, Lester Bagley, tells the Star Tribune that the Vikings are “very interested” in bringing an MLS franchise to Minneapolis, but it’s an idea that’s on the “backburner.”
