Gophers quarterback Mitch Leidner underwent successful surgery on his left foot Wednesday.
In a press release, the university said Leidner’s surgery was previously scheduled and wasn’t the result of an injury suffered during Monday night’s Quick Lane Bowl.
“Mitch’s surgery went well,” said Gophers coach Tracy Claeys. “We will be careful with his recovery process, but hope to have him back at full strength in four months or so.”
According to the Star Tribune, Leidner played through ligament injuries in his foot for the past two seasons and spent much of his time off the field in a walking boot recently.
The timeline means that Leidner will be limited during Minnesota’s spring practices.
Leidner started all 13 games for Minnesota this year. He passed for 2,701 yards and threw 14 touchdown passes. While dealing with the injury, Leidner also ran 107 times for 270 yards and six touchdowns during the season.
Leidner was named the MVP of the Quick Lane Bowl, as he scored the game-winning touchdown in Minnesota’s 21-14 victory over Central Michigan. He also completed 24-of-30 passes for 223 yards and a touchdown.
