Minnesota Twins catcher Mitch Garver announced in an Instagram Story that he needed emergency surgery on his groin after leaving Tuesday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles.
Garver was injured in the first inning of the Twins’ 7-4 loss when a foul tip stuck him in the groin area. After staying down for several minutes, Garver left the game and was sent to the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore.
“I did leave the game with a ‘groin contusion’ and had to go to the emergency room for an ultrasound,” Garver said on his story. “The imaging showed I needed surgery. A successful surgery was performed and I stayed the night in the hospital. I’m recovering well — thanks for all the messages and texts.”
Garver was hitting .224 with eight home runs and 17 RBI this season, but has hit .286 with six home runs and 11 RBI in his past 24 games.
After the game, Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said it was “unlikely” Garver would be catching soon, meaning Ben Rortvedt would likely be seeing more time behind the plate.
The Twins will close out a three-game series with the Orioles on Wednesday night.
