Minnesota got goals from Liz Schepers, Michaela Cava and Kendall Coyle Schofield in the victory.
It’s only fitting the inaugural PWHL championship belongs to the State of Hockey.
Minnesota beat Boston 3-0 in the decisive Game 5 of the PWHL Finals on Wednesday at Tsongas Center in Lowell, Mass., becoming the first team to hoist the Walter Cup. The title looked like it belonged to the Minnesota players.
Minnesota was in the driver’s seat Wednesday night, getting the first goal of the game when Liz Schepers score a tip-in goal 6 minutes, 14 seconds into the second period off assists from Sydney Brodt and Mellissa Channell.
It remained a 1-0 game until midway through the third period.
Michaela Cava scored a wraparound goal 8 minutes, 8 seconds into the third period off feeds from Channell and Taylor Heise to provide Minnesota an insurance goal.
That proved to be enough of a cushion for Minnesota to close out the contest. Kendall Coyne Schofield officially sealed the deal with an empty-net goal with just 2 minutes, 6 seconds remaining in the game. The taste of victory was there.
That was thanks in large part to goaltender Nicole Hensley, who stopped all 17 Boston shots. And the two goals scored by Minnesota were able to spoil a stellar effort in net from Boston goaltender Aerin Frankel, who stopped 41 of 43 Minnesota shots.
Minnesota delivered with a terrific year in the first-ever season of the PWHL. The team survived with its backs against the wall time and time again. And it all added up to winning the inaugural PWHL championship. A fitting end to an excellent run.
