Michael Russo, who has covered the Minnesota Wild for the past 12 years with the Star Tribune, is moving on to a new gig.
Russo announced on his Twitter page on Monday that he’ll be leaving the paper on Sept. 5 for another opportunity which he’ll announce at a later date.
“I did not make this decision lightly, trust me.” said Russo. “It has been an agonizing month of contemplation just because how much I love this job.”
His colleague, Lavelle E. Neal, said on KFAN radio on Monday that Russo will be joining The Athletic, which is the same subscription sports site that MLB insider Ken Roesnthal recently joined.
Russo hasn’t confirmed that however. And The Athletic doesn’t have a Minnesota hub (at least right now).
With nearly 130,000 followers on Twitter, Russo has one of largest followings among media members in the Twin Cities.
Back in 2012, when Zach Parise was the league’s prized free agent, Russo camped out at the St. Paul Airport with a pair of binoculars waiting for his arrival before the Wild announced he’d be signing.
He was also a regular guest on KFAN radio and Fox Sports North Broadcasts.
