Minnesota native Frankie Capan III etched his name into the record books.
Capan shot a 13-under 58 in the opening round of the Korn Ferry Tour’s Veritex Bank Championship at the Texas Rangers Golf Club in Arlington, Texas, on Thursday, becoming just the second player to record a 58 in Korn Ferry Tour history.
It’s the second-lowest score ever recorded on the tour, one shot shy of Cristobal Del Solar’s record 57, which was set at the Astara Golf Championship earlier this year.
Capan opened the front nine with a par before recording four straight birdies. He made three consecutive pars before eagling the par-5 ninth hole. Then Capan rattled off seven consecutive birdies to open the back nine — making it an eight-hole stretch played nine under par — before closing with a pair of pars to secure the 58.
Capan, 24, is a native of North Oaks, Minn., and attended Northwest Christian High School in Phoenix before playing college golf at Alabama. Capan was close to making the PGA Tour at the end of the last Korn Ferry season but finished in a tie for 41st at the Korn Ferry Championship, leaving him at No. 51 in the season standings. The top 30 graduate to the PGA Tour.
Capan is currently at No. 30 in the Korn Ferry standings, but is projected to shoot all the way up to No. 4 after his incredible performance on Thursday.
