Welcome to our weekly college hockey roundup looking back at the world of Division I hockey around the state.
This will be where you can find St. Cloud State, UMD, Minnesota State, and Bemidji State men’s hockey results and analysis each week throughout the college hockey season.
This past weekend, a mixed bag of results for the top puck talents across the state, with only UMD coming out with all the points they could from their two games.
NCHC MINNESOTA-DULUTH: The Bulldogs continued their red-hot play this weekend with a pair of road wins against Western Michigan.
Friday, the two sides were tied at two heading into the third period, but three goals in the final 16 minutes made the scoreline look one-sided in UMD’s favor.
Saturday, a low-scoring affair was in store, and Bulldogs goalie Aaron Crandall stopped 32 shots in a 3-1 win.
With the two wins, UMD hops Western Michigan in the NCHC standings, and now rest just three points out of the top spot in the conference, trailing St. Cloud State.
NCHC ST. CLOUD STATE: Speaking of the Huskies, the No. 5 team in the nation couldn’t come up with a sweep in their series with Nebraska-Omaha.
SCSU scored plenty on the weekend, combining for 11 goals over their two games, with six of those coming Saturday after Friday’s 5-3 win.
But UNO scored eight times in the series finale, six of those against starting goalie Ryan Faragher, who was pulled just 41 seconds into the third period.
8-6 was the final, as Charlie Lindgren came on to give up two goals in the 10 shots he faced.
SCSU is still on top of the NCHC, though five teams are within three points of sharing the lead with the Huskies.
WCHA MINNESOTA STATE: The Mavericks, much like the Bulldogs, traveled to Michigan for their weekend series.
The opponent was Northern Michigan, and after going down 5-2 to the Wildcats Friday, MSU got two short-handed lamp-lighters and two power-play goals as well to exact revenge in a 5-1 win.
J.P. Lafontaine scored twice for the Mavericks in the Saturday win, and Minnesota State remains two points behind Ferris State for the WCHA lead.
