This will be where you can find Saint Cloud State, UMD, Minnesota State, and Bemidji State men’s hockey results and analysis each week throughout the college hockey season.
Its a state full of schools loaded with puck talent, here’s what they managed last weekend.
NCHC SAINT CLOUD STATE: The No. 3 Huskies, who skyrocketed in the USCHO.com national poll last week after sweeping UND, had another tough test on their hands with No. 7 Miami (OH).
After dropping game one of the weekend series at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, the Huskies came back Saturday night to claw out a split with the Redhawks.
Miami (OH) goalie Ryan McKay stopped all 31 SCSU shots Friday, and he managed 33 saves Saturday as well, but let two slip past him, which would be all the Huskies needed.
They got the game winner Saturday at 10:52 of the third period, with David Morley coming through off a pass from Jimmy Murray. Saint Cloud goalie Ryan Faragher made himself big 29 times, allowing just one goal to leave the final tally at 2-1 in favor of the hometown side.
SCSU sits atop the NCHC standings along with Nebraksa-Omaha, each sporting three wins.
WCHA BEMIDJI STATE: The Beavers faced a tough task, going to No. 19 Ferris State over the weekend to try and improve their 3-1 conference record.
Instead, Friday proved to be a back breaker for BSU, as Jason Binkley netted an overtime goal to send the Beavers to their second WCHA loss of the year.
Saturday was filled with early fireworks, with Ferris State scoring four first period goals to seemingly end the finale of the weekend early.
But Bemidji State fought back with three of their own in the second, two coming from Markus Gerbrandt, and suddenly it was 4-3 with the game hanging in the balance once again.
Drama lacked late though, as Ferris State added a fifth goal in the second period, which would conclude the scoring, a 5-3 win for the Bulldogs.
WCHA MINNESOTA STATE: The Mavericks were locked in a highly competitive series with Bowling Green all weekend, with a pair of one-goal games being split between the two sides.
Friday, the No. 18 team in the country had their special teams to blame for not coming out on top against BGSU, as the Falcons found two short-handed goals in period two the difference in their 4-3 win over Minnesota State.
Saturday, there wasn’t a goal to be found on either side until overtime, when the Mavericks exacted revenge via a Johnny Mcinnis goal that made sure Minnesota State would leave the weekend no worse for wear.
The split is the Mavericks second in two conference series this year, and they sit smack dab in the middle of the WCHA standings along with the two Alaska teams and Northern Michigan at 2-2.
UMD was off this weekend, while the Gophers, whom we cover on a game-by-game basis with game recaps, split with No. 4 Notre Dame.
