Bring Me The Sports has confirmed through a reliable source that the “major” announcement Minnesota Sports and Events will make Tuesday at 11 a.m. will be about Target Center in Minneapolis hosting the 2024 U.S. Gymnastics Olympic Trials.
For anyone paying close attention, the news hasn’t been hidden all that well. On May 3, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz essentially spilled the beans by tweeting a photo with St. Paul native and 2021 all-around gold medal-winner Sunisa Lee, saying Minnesota is “bringing sports like the gymnastics Olympic trials to the Twin Cities.”
He then thanked Lee and the MNSE for their work, prompting MNSE to respond by saying “It’s not final yet.” Well, now it is and the trails will be held in Minneapolis later this year.
The 2021 gymnastics trials were held in St. Louis and the final night of competition drew a record 20,815 fans, a record for a single session, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
The Twin Cities hosting the trials could be even more significant if Lee competes. The 20-year-old won the all-around gold medal at the 2021 Tokyo games and would be among the favorites if she competes again. That, however, is in question after she announced in April that she’s stepping away from gymnastics at Auburn University to focus on recovering from a kidney issue.
The 2024 Olympics could also feature ex-Minnesota Gopher Shane Wiskus, who represented the U.S. men’s team in Tokyo and is currently a member of the U.S. competing competing later this year at the Pan American Games in Chile.
