Sam Bradford’s injured knee forced the Vikings to roll with quarterback Case Keenum on Sunday, and the results weren’t pretty.
Keenum completed just 20-of 37-passes for 167 yards – good for 4.5 yards per attempt.
Sure, he was thrown into the fire, but with a career passer rating of just 77.9, it’s going to be awfully tough for Minnesota to win football games on the arm of Keenum alone.
At a press conference from Winter Park on Monday, head coach Mike Zimmer said he doesn’t anticipate the team will sign another quarterback.
So no, Colin Kaepernick won’t be coming to Minnesota (at least for now).
Kaepernick’s numbers are a heck of a lot better than Keenum’s, but it doesn’t appear Bradford’s injury is that big of a deal.
Zimmer said Bradford is day-to-day.
“I’m never going to put a player out on the field who can’t protect himself,” said Zimmer. “I don’t have a crystal ball – I don’t know. When he’s ready he’s going to play. I don’t think it’s going to be a long-term thing.”
The Vikings also signed rookie Kyle Sloter from the team’s practice squad. Sloter dazzled in the preseason with the Denver Broncos, but he’s behind Keenum on the depth chart and still has a long way to go to learn the Vikes’ playbook.
So, Kaepernick, or any other free agent quarterback who knows nothing about the Vikings’ offense makes little sense at the moment.
For now, it’s still the Sam Bradford/Case Keenum show, starring Dalvin Cook, Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen, with special appearances from Danielle Hunter, Anthony Barr, Harrison Smith and a damn good defense.
