We’re not sure what Mike Tice is better at, being a pro football coach, or hanging out at the track and cashing in.
This past August, the beginning of a year that was Tice’s first out of pro football since 1980, the former Viking head coach hit it big on a Pick Six in California, a bet that made him over $100,000.
Tice will be coaching in the NFL this year, as he was hired by the Atlanta Falcons as their offensive line coach last week, but his real money maker may be back at the track.
Tice is part owner of Midnight Hawk, a three-year-old colt that won Saturday’s Sham Stakes at Santa Anita Park. With the victory, the horse earned 10 points towards qualifying for the 2014 Kentucky Derby, which takes place on the first weekend in May.
While there is quite the amount of time left before the 20-horse field is decided for the Derby, it’s never too early to speculate on Tice winning big once again, and the Kentucky Derby website currently has Midnight Hawk as the 10th-place horse in the race to get into the Derby.
To set the stakes for the next four months and make Tice’s mouth water, the prize for first-place in the Derby is nearly $1.5 million.
