Twins prospect Miguel Sano is recovering following successful surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right shoulder, the Star Tribune reports.
The initial belief was that Sano partially tore the ligament, but surgeons who operated on him in New York found that the entire ligament was torn. Sano suffered the injury during a team scrimmage in Florida on Feb. 27 while making an off-balance throw from third base to first base. The good news is that it doesn’t change anything with his rehab. He still has 13 months before the start of the 2015 season, which he is expected to be ready for.
“Thank God, everything went well,” Sano said Thursday, according to ESPNdeportes.com. “I think I’ll be playing baseball in the fall, but I’m between playing in the Arizona Fall League or winter ball in the Dominican Republic.”
He should be able to swing a bat again in 4-5 months, but Twins assistant general manager Rob Antony isn’t making any guarantees.
“The time frame says (Sano) should probably be ready,” Antony said, according to the Pioneer Press. “It will be a little bit up to him, a little bit up to us to be able to monitor him and make sure. You’d like to be able to control when he first starts doing things. We’ll see.”
Sano was recently rated the No. 4-ranked prospect in all of MLB by MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo.
Dressed in a hospital gown just before the operation on Wednesday, Sano released a video with a message to his fans.
