Miguel Sanó smashed a grand slam as the Minnesota Twins split a doubleheader with the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday afternoon.
The story of Game 1 was Angels first baseman Phil Gosselin, who started the game with a solo home run against Lewis Thorpe. After Rob Refsnyder tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the second, Gosselin drove in another run on an RBI double in the third inning to give L.A. a 2-1 lead.
Tyler Duffey came into the game in the fifth inning and the Angels blew the game open on a two-run homer by Taylor Ward and an RBI double by Juan Lagares to hand Minnesota a 7-1 defeat.
The second game was dominated by the Twins’ power at the plate. The big blow came in the first inning when Sanó delivered a grand slam off Griffin Canning to give the Twins a 4-0 lead.

Sanó’s fifth home run in the past seven games gave José Berríos an early lead to work with but Jose Rojas chipped into the lead with a solo homer in the first inning.
With two more runs scoring in the second inning, the Angels made it a 4-3 game before Mitch Garver hit his seventh home run of the season.

Trevor Larnach added an insurance run with a solo home run in the seventh and the Twins were able to leave Anaheim with a split.
After Thursday’s doubleheader, the Twins (15-28) will head to Cleveland where they’ll open a three-game series with the Indians on Friday night.
