Miguel Sano’s laceration on his right heel is much worse than the Twins originally thought.
Twins Chief Baseball Officer Derek Falvey announced Tuesday that Sano will not be ready to join the team on Opening Day – March 28 – and will likely be out until May as he recovers from a laceration on his right heel.
Sano underwent a debridement procedure Tuesday morning at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. He will stay in Minnesota for 2-3 days and wear a hard boot on his foot for a week, and then transition to a soft boot for 1-2 additional weeks.
It’s expected that he’ll begin playing baseball again in mid-April.

He’ll resume baseball activities in April. MLB return expected in May.

According to the University of California San Francisco, a debridement procedure is the thorough cleaning of a wound’s thickened, infected or dead tissue and promotes healing.
The Twins’ original plan was to have Sano wear a boot for 7-10 days, but the club announced last Thursday that Sano’s recovery is taking longer than expected.
“Yeah, it’s a little frustrating, I would say,” Sano said last Thursday, via the Twins. “Because I worked really hard in the offseason to get to Spring Training in shape and ready to go, and now this happened. But it’s just a setback and we’ll get it going next week.”
Sano suffered a laceration on the back of his foot during a championship parade with his winter ball team in the Dominican Republic. One of his teammates slipped on a stage and bumped into Sano, who fell into metal stairs and suffered a cut that required 12 stitches.
With Sano sidelined, it’s a good bet that Marwin Gonzalez will begin the season as the starting third baseman.
