Miguel Sano’s rehab assignment with the Class A Advanced Fort Myers Miracle is off to an excellent start.
The soon-to-be 26-year-old went 0-for-1 and was hit by a pitch in his first game on Tuesday and then went 4-for-4 with a home run, three singles and three RBI in a game Thursday.
Sano was supposed to be in action on Wednesday but that game got rained out. He wound up playing in just two games with the Miracle, and now he’s reportedly on his way up the Florida panhandle where he’ll spend the weekend playing with the Double-A Pensacola Blue Wahoos.
The Star Tribune’s Phil Miller reports that the Twins hope to bring Sano back up to the Twins by May 12, and Twins team reporter Do-Hyoung Park writes that Sano is also expected to play games at Triple-A Rochester before being called up.
Sano spent the offseason getting into tremendous shape with a dedicated workout and nutrition plan, but high hopes to begin the 2019 season were put on hold when he cut his right heel during a parade celebration with his Dominican Winter League team that won the championship.
The cut didn’t heal properly and he was forced to wear a walking boot, eventually getting back into baseball activities in early April. He spent the rest of April simulating spring training, and now he’s nearing his return to a Twins team that owns the best record in baseball (19-10).
