Before he takes to the field as a Minnesota Viking for the first time, Michael Floyd will be spending some time in jail.
The St. Paul native has been ordered to serve one day in jail for violating the conditions of his house arrest following a DUI in February, according to ESPN’s Josh Weinfuss.
He wasn’t allowed to consume alcohol as part of his house arrest yet tested positive earlier this month – which he blamed on the consumption of the slightly-alcoholic, fermented tea drink kombucha. (Which, yes, does contain some alcohol.)
The Vikings backed him up on his explanation, with Floyd saying he didn’t realize the drink was alcoholic, but NBC Sports reports a judge in Scottsdale, Arizona didn’t buy it and ordered him to serve a day in jail.
He will also have to complete the five remaining days of his 120-day jail sentence handed down for the original DUI offense under house arrest. The Pioneer Press reported prosecutors had wanted him to spend those five remaining days in jail.
Floyd served 24 days in jail at the start of his sentence but was released under house arrest for the remaining 96.
The newspaper notes Vikings’ COO Kevin Warren corroborated Floyd’s kombucha claim, saying he drank several bottles with tight end Kyle Rudolph on June 10-11.
Floyd was fired from the Arizona Cardinals following his guilty plea, but signed with the Vikings in May.
