Twins first baseman Joe Mauer was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a lower back strain on Friday.

The former MVP is hitting .285, with 5 home runs, 34 RBI and 17 doubles this year. If the season ended today, it would be Mauer’s highest batting average since 2013.
With the All-Star Break looming, Mauer will have additional time to rest up; he’ll eligible to return from his DL stint by July 15.
To replace Mauer on the roster, Minnesota recalled Kennys Vargas from Triple-A Rochester. In 44 games with the Twins this season, Vargas is hitting .231 with 7 dingers.
The Twins host the Baltimore Orioles Friday night from Target Field, first pitch is set for 7:10 p.m.
